Our halal commitment

Halal is often seen as a food label. For us it is a complete standard for business: what we sell, how we fund it and how we treat people. Here is what that means, in plain English.

A commitment, not a certificate

Bhope Business Group LTD does not currently hold a halal certification from any certifying body, and we do not display any certification marks. This page describes the principles we follow and the checks we are putting in place. If a specific product is certified in future, we will say so on that product and name the certifying body.

For everyone

What halal means

Halal is an Arabic word meaning permissible. In daily life it guides what Muslims eat, use and how they earn and spend money. Many people of other faiths, and none, choose halal goods because the same ideas of cleanliness, honesty and care appeal to them too.

Halal حلال
Permissible. Anything allowed under Islamic principles, from food and ingredients to the way money is earned.
Haram حرام
Prohibited. For example pork, intoxicating alcohol, and dishonest or exploitative trade.
Tayyib طيّب
Good and wholesome. Halal sets the minimum; tayyib asks that something is also clean, safe and of good quality.
Mashbooh مشبوه
Doubtful. When it is unclear whether something is permitted, the careful choice is to avoid it until it is clarified.

Three places our principles show up

Sourcing

What we sell, and where it comes from.

  • Ask every supplier to declare ingredients, materials and processing methods.
  • Prefer suppliers who hold recognised halal certification for their own products, and keep copies of those certificates.
  • Avoid prohibited ingredients such as pork derivatives and intoxicating alcohol, and treat uncertain ingredients with caution until they are clarified.
  • Keep halal goods separate from other goods during storage and transport.
  • Expect humane treatment of animals and safe, fair conditions for workers.

Finance

How we fund growth and make agreements.

  • Avoid interest (riba) by seeking funding through ownership, partnership and profit-sharing structures.
  • Keep contracts clear and complete, avoiding excessive uncertainty (gharar).
  • Stay away from gambling and pure speculation (maysir).
  • Do not invest in businesses whose core activity is prohibited, such as alcohol, gambling or pork products.
  • Pay suppliers and partners fairly and on time.

Operations

How we behave day to day.

  • Market honestly, with no exaggerated or misleading claims.
  • Treat employees, contractors and partners with fairness and respect.
  • Reduce waste and look after the environment our trade depends on.
  • Handle customer information with care and in line with privacy law.
  • Admit and correct mistakes openly.

Supplier checks

How we check a new supplier

These steps happen in order before a supplier's products carry the Bhope name.

  1. Declaration

    The supplier completes a declaration covering ingredients or materials, processing, and any halal certification they hold.

  2. Documents

    We collect supporting documents such as specification sheets, certificates of origin and, where held, halal certificates from recognised bodies.

  3. Review

    We review the information, ask questions about anything unclear and, where needed, seek specialist advice.

  4. Ongoing monitoring

    We re-check documents when they expire or when a product, recipe or process changes, and we act on any concern raised with us.

  • Describe a product as halal without evidence to support it.
  • Use a certification mark or logo we have not been granted.
  • Hide ingredients, materials or country of origin.
  • Knowingly work with suppliers who misrepresent their products.
